What is Import Export Code (IEC)?
Import Export Code (IEC) Certificate is a document that contains 10-digit unique identification number required for individuals and businesses involved in importing or exporting of goods in India. It becomes mandatory when a person or company plans to start international trade, receive foreign currency payments, or ship goods across Indian borders for commercial purposes. Without IEC, customs authorities will not allow clearance of import or export shipments, making it an essential registration for global business operations.
IEC is required in situations such as importing raw materials from other countries, exporting finished goods abroad, providing services to foreign clients, or selling products on international e-commerce platforms. It is also necessary for businesses that want to claim export benefits or government incentives. However, IEC is not required for personal imports or exports that are not done for commercial activities.
The IEC is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The government fee for IEC registration is ₹1000, which is paid online at the time of application. It is a one-time registration with lifetime validity, subject to mandatory annual online update of details on the DGFT portal.
